A Prayer for Our Country

“I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people — for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.” (1 Timothy 2:1-2, NIV)

Heavenly Father, thank you for those who have been entrusted with the high calling of leadership in our country — from the local school board to the White House. We know that all authority that exists has been established by your hand (Romans 13:1). Today, we pray that you would impart our leaders with the wisdom that comes from you (Job 12:13) — wisdom that is pure, peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere (James 3:17). Surround our leaders with godly advisors and give them success in all their endeavors (Proverbs 15:22). Give them the courage to obey your leading despite personal preferences or political pressure. We pray that they would seek justice, love mercy and walk humbly with you each day (Micah 6:8).

We also pray for our neighbors in our community. Help us to live in harmony with one another in all humility (Romans 12:16). Help us not only look to our own needs but to the needs of others as well (Philippians 2:4). Allow our neighbors to recognize Jesus in our lives by the way that we love (John 13:35). Allow the local church in America to shine like a city on a hill and bring hope and healing to our broken world.

A Prayer for Compassion

“If you spend yourselves on behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday.” (Isaiah 58:10, NIV)

Heavenly Father, thank you for being a God who upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry (Psalm 146:7). We pray for all Compassion children and their families. Provide for their physical, emotional and spiritual needs. Continue to grow these children in the knowledge of your love and bring them into a saving relationship with your son, Jesus Christ. Instill in them a resilient hope that comes from a trust in your good plan for their lives (Jeremiah 29:11).

Lord, we pray for the Compassion field staff, church partners, pastors and volunteers who have dedicated their lives to serving children in poverty. Psalm 41:1 (NIV) tells us, “Blessed are those who have regard for the weak; the Lord delivers him in times of trouble.” Protect those who minister in the most dangerous environments. Sustain these servants with your strength and give them peace as they work every day to meet the needs of children in the most challenging situations.

A Prayer of Thanksgiving

“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” (1 Thessalonians 5:18, NIV)

Heavenly Father, thank you for our freedom here in the United States. Thank you for the resources and opportunities that you have blessed us with in this country.

As we thank you for our abundance of food, we remember the hungry.
As we thank you for health, we remember the sick and those without access to medical care.
As we thank you for our friends and families, we remember those who have been abandoned.
As we thank you for our freedom, we remember the enslaved.

Allow these blessings to stir our hearts to service, that we would join in your work of reconciling all things to yourself through Jesus Christ (Colossians 1:15-20). Thank you for the gift of Jesus, who has given us the ultimate freedom from sin and death.
