About Sri Lanka

The small island nation of Sri Lanka recently emerged from more than two decades of civil war and political fighting. Although the economy is slowly being rebuilt, many are still living in poverty.

With a population of nearly 21.5 million, 85% of people live in rural areas of the monsoon-prone island and children are especially susceptible to poverty and its devastating effects.

21 percent of children under age five are malnourished or underweight.
Water-borne diseases like bacterial diarrhea and Hepatitis A are common.
14 percent of the population is living below $1.25 per day.
